Q and A

How do I select a strong Kryptofile Lite pass code

Kryptofile Lite will prompt you for a pass code when you protect a file.  You should aim to enter a pass code with the following features:

  • Enter a long pass code, 32 characters would be ideal.
  • Pass code should have a mixture of letters and numbers.
  • Letters should be in upper case and lower case.

If you enter a short pass code then Kryptofile Lite will use this to generate the 256 bit AES key.  If your pass code is too short and too simple then this simplifies attempts to decrypt your files.

Do not save your pass code on your PC.

What are the advantages of using Kryptofile Personal over Kryptofile Lite

There are two advantages to using Kryptofile Personal:

  1. The pass code saved in the Security Key is a strong 256 bit pass code. This is generated using a special AES pass code generator.  Files protected using the Kryptofile Security Key are harder to decrypt than those protected using your own pass code.
  2. Since the pass code is saved in on a USB memory stick you will not need to remember this to use it.  Obviously if you lose the USB memory key then you will not be able to read any of the protected files.

What is the difference between Kryptofile Lite and Personal

These products are identical except that Kryptofile Lite is free and Kryptofile Personal is now.  Also Kryptofile Personal includes a special Kryptofile Security Key which you need to save onto a USB memory stick.  If you start Kryptofile Personal without attaching the USB Security Key to your PC then Kryptofile Personal will behave the same was as Kryptofile Lite and will prompt you for a pass code.

Does Kryptofile save any data on the Kryptofile USB security key?

Kryptofile does not save any user data on the USB security key.  All data is saved on the user's PC or on the Kryptofile server if  you are using Kryptofile Enterprise or Ultimate.

Can I protect single files using Kryptofile?

You can use Kryptofile to protected individual files, groups of files or folders.  Kryptofile is not a disk encryption tool and therefore you have total freedom to decide what gets protected and what does not.

How can I locate protected files?

If  you are using Kryptofile Lite then the protected files will have the Kryptofile icon.  If  you are using other versions of Kryptofile then the protected files can be found using the Kryptofile browser and the Kryptofile file/record id.

Can other users read my protected files if I share a PC with them?

Users who share your PC cannot read your protected files unless you give them access to your Kryptofile USB security key.

Can I mail protected files to other users?

Protected files can be treated as any other type of file and therefore they can be copied, moved or attached to e-mails.  If you copy a protected file to other users who have their own copy of Kryptofile then these users will not be able to read the protected files unless they have a copy of your USB security key.

Can I share my Kryptofile security key with other users?

You may copy your Kryptofile security key and share this with other users.  There is no charge for sharing the security key however other users must purchase and install Kryptofile on their own PCs.

Can I install Kryptofile on multiple PCs?

Yes you can install Kryptofile on multiple PCs and there is no additional charge as long as these PCs are all for your personal use.

Can I get a replacement Kryptofile security key?

Whilst we keep a copy of all generated keys we do not keep a record to link the keys to the owners.  Therefore we are unable to replace a lost Kryptofile security key unless you are able to provide us with the key name.  The key name is the same as the key file name that we dispatched to you by e-mail or on the USB memory key.

Can I use multiple Kryptofile security keys on a single installation?

Yes you can use multiple security keys on a single installation though you will need to save each of these to a separate USB memory stick and you also you will need to track which files were protected using which key. If you are using Kryptofile Personal, Enterprise or Ultimate then the Kryptofile Browser will display the records and files that were protected using the active Kryptofile security key.  Please contact sales for info on how to buy additional security keys.

How can I backup and restore protected files?

Protected files using Kryptofile Lite can be backed up and restored just as any other type of PC files.  To backup and restore files protected using other versions of Kryptofile you need to backup and restore the Kryptofile database file.
